Royal Caribbean International (RCI) launched their website for their newest Genesis Project ship...now named
Oasis of the Seas (and effectively naming the class Oasis-class).
Now I know that very few on here are interested in nautical things, preferring the roads and skies to the seas, but this is quite something...

220,000 GRT (~220 million cubic feet of interior volume)
5,400 passengers (unknown crew complement)
2,000 staterooms
16 decks (213ft above water line)
30ft draft
1,191ft length
154ft beam
8 x 17,500hp engines (140,000hp total)
Est. $1.2B cost
Now, to give a potential sense of scale, my trip in March on
Splendour of the Seas was aboard a 70,000 GRT ship.
davidology's cruise on
Liberty of the Seas was aboard a 160,000 GRT ship.
Some renderings:

"Central Park"

The "AquaTheater", which is an outdoor amphitheater on the stern.

A "loft suite" cabin - probably priced at some crazy thing, but...wow.

Under construction at Aker Yards in Turku, Finland, March 27, 2008. Looks like that's the full height.
It looks like they've forgone the standard "promenade" deck about half-way up in favor of having an exposed interior...making "interior" staterooms now...well, exterior, just without an ocean view. That could be interesting, though I've always enjoyed being able to walk around the promenade deck. More info and stuff at www.oasisoftheseas.com. Anyway, this project made big news a couple of years ago when she was ordered, but it's pretty cool to see more details being released. Talk about some impressive design and engineering.
Anyone want to go on a trip with me in late 2009?
